Granite Kitchen Counters, Sinks, And Floors

Granite kitchen counters are a popular improvement and while they used to be reserved for very high end homes; there are ways to make it more affordable for the average homeowner. Solid slab countertops are the most expensive way to go. Granite tiles are a bit less expensive to buy and to install. Granite strength varies and granite tiles are typically thicker than ceramic tiles; 3/8 inch or more.

The upside to using granite is that it is very beautiful as well as durable. It resists most stains if properly sealed. It does require regular sealing and maintenance to keep its appearance. Granite tiles may vary from box to box because the stone may have different gradations of color. The packers make every effort to match them as closely as possible, but be sure to check all the tiles before installation. Tiles are usually 12 inches square. They can be laid onto a clear silicone base and then the entire surface can be sealed. It may take several coats of sealer to fill in the spaces between tiles.

Another use for granite in the kitchen is granite kitchen sinks. They are very durable, scratch resistant and add a luxurious element to your kitchen. They are expensive, but you will never have to replace them if you follow care instructions carefully. You will need to clean and dry the sink daily. It is recommended that you not leave water or dishes soaking in the sink for long periods of time because it may cause discoloration of the stone. The same is true for dishcloths or cleaning pads. Water with a high mineral content will invariably cause some stains. They can easily be cleaned with a dilute vinegar and water solution and rinsed with plain water. Everyday stains can be removed with mild dishwashing liquid and stubborn stains may be cleaned with a very dilute bleach and water solution. You can purchase granite sinks in single and double styles. They are definitely an investment, but the payoff is added value to your home and a beautiful kitchen.

Granite kitchen flooring is an excellent choice in terms of beauty and durability. The kitchen may be the most used and abused area of the home. Your kitchen floor gets more spills, dropped items and traffic than almost anyother room in the house. Granite flooring will stand up to whatever you throw at it. It’s easy to clean and unaffected by grease, boiling water, coffee, tea, and sugary soda spills. If you drop pots, pans, and cutlery; it will survive. Even broken dishes cause no problem if swept up immediately. I have four dogs and I’m sure it would even survive their pointy little claws. It comes in colors and patterns to compliment any décor and you’ll enjoy it for years to come.

Granite: Why every homeowner wants a piece of the rock
