Kitchen Backsplash Ideas
The backsplash area of the kitchen needs to be durable and easy to clean. The walls above the sink and stove area are notoriously prone to grease and food stains and no matter how diligent you are; it’s hard to maintain a painted wall in those areas. There are a number of attractive kitchen backsplash ideas that may not cost as much as you imagined.
I have always admired the tile murals above stove tops and thought they were likely way out of my price range. As it turns out; this is not necessarily so. Of course, if the mural is very large, it will cost more, but a smaller tile mural can be less than $100.00. They can even digitally reproduce a photograph of your choice for your mural or accent tiles. The tiles may be smooth textured ceramic tiles, textured surface porcelain tiles, or rough textured tumbled marble tiles for a rustic décor. I was amazed at the variety of subject matter from which you can custom create your mural. There are murals of everything from classic artwork to farm animals.
In a modern kitchen a stainless steel backsplash will look great. It’s very easy to clean and now there are stainless steel tiles available as well. Copper is another popular options, but it needs to be coated to avoid oxidation. Repurposed tin ceiling tiles also make an attractive backsplash. I have searched all kinds of salvage piles looking for old tin ceiling tiles, but they are becoming hard to find.
For an eco-friendly backsplash idea, you can easily find 100% recycled glass tiles. They come in a lot of colors and a mix of colors is particularly attractive. In fact, you could repurpose almost any durable non porous material as a backsplash, even an old porcelain sign. Your kitchen backsplash will be one of a kind.
If you have your set on pricey patterned tiles but your budget won’t permit it; think about using just a few of the expensive tiles as accents and a cheaper solid color tile for the majority of the backsplash. White subway tile is inexpensive and gives the kitchen a clean look. If you have the tiles set on the diagonal; you’ll get an entirely different look.
Brick and slate also make a good kitchen backsplash especially in a country kitchen. The brick could be salvaged from an old building or new. Many people will replace their old slate roof and you can sometimes buy them for very little money. I have seen stone and even seashells set into concrete for another look. You may want to check with an experienced contractor regarding sealing porous surfaces for maximum durability. To get the most for your money, consider using a washable wall covering for the majority of the backsplash and use the beautiful tile or stone just above the cook top where it’s needed most.
