Kitchen Furniture
Do you really need kitchen furniture? Your cabinets and island are built in and so are the appliances. Yes, that is the case in many kitchens, but some people have an eat-in kitchen or breakfast nook and they will need a table and chairs or benches of some sort. If you have an island with enough room, you may want some chairs or stools for your family or guests to sit on while you cook. They’re perfect for a quick family lunch too.
If you don’t have enough storage, or just love the look; you can find baker’s cupboards, pie safes, and jelly cabinets to give that country kitchen some panache. Hanging pot racks look great over an existing island. Most kitchens do not include a pantry and there are many pantry cabinet options on the market. For a small space, the very narrow ones will fit in the space of a broom closet and double your storage space. I don’t know about you, but I can never have enough storage space. I must confess that I love dishes and glassware and probably have way more than I’ll ever need. Some of it belonged to my grandmother and some I picked up at yard sales. Certainly most of us do not need large serving trays and platters on an every day basis, but having a cabinet to store those clears up space for your everyday needs.
Even in a small kitchen you can make room for a little Bistro set and a rolling kitchen cart will provide extra storage and counter space. The advantage to the rolling kitchen carts or islands is their portability. They can be placed where you need them at any given time. I do not have enough counter space and I found a small porcelain top table at a yard sale. It fits neatly into the space under a window and I have a great little prep station that’s easy to clean and great for rolling cookie or pie dough.
Most of us do not entertain on large scale very often, but when we do; we always seem to be scrambling for extra chairs or places for our guests to put their food. They make some very inexpensive, but attractive folding chairs and tables that can be pulled out when your guests exceed your dining table’s capacity. I like using a few smaller tables versus a large one which can sometimes feel cramped. Have you ever been to party where once you were seated it was impossible to get up without making everyone move?
Kitchens are so multi functional these days that almost anything goes. If you have the space, a comfortable reading chair or love seat is a nice addition. I have a rocking chair in my kitchen. Kitchen furniture doesn’t have to be specifically made for a kitchen. Mix it up a little and I’ll bet you’ll like the results.
