Kitchen Ideas
Whether you are remodeling an existing kitchen or building an entirely new one; there are lots of sources for kitchen ideas. Of course, the important thing is that you are happy with the end result. Most of us have some idea of what want in terms of a new kitchen. I think people who like to cook always want a larger kitchen that will also serve as an area to entertain. It’s equally important that it function well and that’s where a kitchen designer may be of help.
I enjoy HGTV and DIY. They are a great source of ideas for home décor. Food Network kitchens are another source of inspiration. Paula Deen has my dream kitchen. You can also check out design magazines like Better Homes and Gardens or Good Housekeeping. They almost always have some articles and pictures of kitchens. Country Living and Southern Living are two of my favorites, but your local Home Depot has displays of all kinds of kitchens and you can see them first hand before making your choice. Of course, there are a multitude of web sites and catalogs that feature kitchen furniture and accessories.
If you are on a limited budget, one of the best ways to transform any room is with paint. It’s inexpensive and can make a huge difference. Paint is not limited to the walls. Wooden floors can be painted and sealed. I did not know it, but you can even paint over old linoleum with the proper preparation. Cabinets take up most of the wall space in many of our kitchens and while the wood cabinets you chose twenty years ago still function; you can paint them or just change out the hardware for an entirely new look. If you are thinking of selling your home at some point in the future; a kitchen update will be a wise investment. Think about adding an island or updating your lighting fixtures. You might even consider replacing your existing cabinet doors with a glass front style. When we first remodeled our house, I chose to use some freestanding pieces I already owned instead of adding upper cabinets. The house is old and it has a walk-in pantry so I opted to use things I already had to round out the kitchen décor.
I do have lower cabinets under the sink, but an old china cabinet houses my dishes and my grandmother’s jelly cupboard provides storage for glasses.
I think that kitchen design is a matter of personal taste as well as function, so choose what works for you. Research and get ideas from multiple sources to help you make an informed decision in creating your dream kitchen.
