Kitchen Islands
Kitchen Islands remain popular additions to kitchens of all styles. Once they were mainly prep areas and sometimes provided additional seating. Today they are an integral part of the kitchen. Many islands feature prep sinks, cook tops, grill tops, or deep fryers. There is often additional storage below the island or a hanging pot rack above it.
When you are entertaining a large area with seating on one side will allow you to be a part of the party while you are preparing food. The hostess is no longer buried in the kitchen while everyone else enjoys a get together. When I was kid, we gathered at my grandmother’s kitchen table before dinner to help with the preparations and it later doubled as the “kids’ table.” The adults ate in the dining room. Today’s kitchens are better set up for entertaining and an attractive kitchen island is a part of it.
Even a small kitchen could accommodate an island. Usually a moveable island is the best choice for a small area. They often offer additional storage and they can be easily rolled into whatever area needs those most. They can be very simple and look more like a kitchen cart with a shelf underneath or they may have a butcher block top and closed cabinet underneath.
Built in islands usually mimic the style of the other kitchen cabinetry and may have granite, marble, laminate, or stainless steel tops. The prep area is often on one side of a large island and a seating area is on the opposite side. Storage cabinets underneath will keep everything you need at hand. You can even have a small refrigerator or freezer drawer incorporated into the island as well as a wine rack on one end.
A kitchen island can define the space in a large kitchen breaking up a large expanse of bare floor. It may also separate the cooking area from the entertaining area. The addition of pendant lighting or a chandelier will make an elegant statement. If your kitchen is very modern, industrial lighting fixtures will look great and provide excellent task lighting.
I love the idea of kitchen islands because I like to talk to my guests while I am cooking and maybe enlist their help in meal preparation. The men will be most likely watching sports before dinner so an island makes a wonderful gathering place for the women. It beats the heck out of that old kitchen table.
