Kitchen Paint
Paint is one of the least expensive ways to update the look of any room and the kitchen is no exception. There are two types of kitchen paint; oil paint and latex paint. Oil paint is very durable and can withstand a lot of cleaning, but it is also very shiny. Latex paint comes in flat, semi gloss, and high gloss finishes. Semi gloss is a good choice for kitchen walls. All you have to do is choose a color. You definitely get what you pay for when it comes to paint, so choose higher end paint for your kitchen. Talk with the sales associates and get their recommendations on which paint will hold up best in a kitchen.
It is important to know what kind of paint is already on the kitchen walls. If you try to paint latex over oil based paint, the results will not be pleasing. Oil paint never truly dries and once painted over with latex will tend to peel and chip. If you are unsure about what kind of paint is on the wall, get a test kit from your local hardware store or be prepared to do a coat or two of primer before you put a new color on the walls. Primer is also a good idea if you are painting light over dark colors.
An inexpensive way to update kitchen cabinets is to paint them and change the hardware. It is a weekend project that will go a long towards improving the look of a dreary kitchen. I know prep work is boring and you wan to get right to applying the pretty new color; but dont skimp here.
Take the time to properly clean, sand, and prime your old cabinets to get the most professional results. The kitchen is a greasy place and even the best housekeepers will find a residue of grease on cabinets, so clean them first and then apply primer. Take the doors and hardware off to make your job easier. Primer is important to the final look of the finish. For a glassy look use a high build sandable primer. Paint two coats sanding after each one before applying the final color. Its helpful to build a drying rack form scrap wood. Just drill in a few screws and hang the doors so you can flip them when they are dry. It is also helpful to put a few cup hooks into the doors so you can handle them without leaving fingerprints. Latex paint labeled 100% acrylic will give a smooth glossy finish. Once everything is dry; reattach the hardware and replace the doors.
You could always hire a professional painter but if your budget wont allow it; its a pretty easy job to do yourself. Choose your kitchen paint color and get the right type of paint for the job and youll be done before you know it and have a bright new look in your kitchen.
