Kitchen Replacement

If you have an older home you love, but long for a modern efficient kitchen; your best option may be a total kitchen replacement. Yes I know it does sound daunting, but your contractor will probably tell you that gutting the existing kitchen to the studs and starting over will cost you less in the long run.

How could it possibly be cheaper? Well, to start with older homes do not have the necessary electrical service to run modern appliances. The plumbing may also need to be updated particularly if you plant to put in a prep sink or a built in dishwasher. My parents had friend who owned a lovely old Colonial home. I had always admired it and from the outside it was beautiful. When that older couple died, the house remained on the market for an extraordinarily long time and before it finally sold, it had be reduced a few times. The realtor told us that they had never updated the kitchen or bathrooms and that made it very difficult to sell for the original asking price.

I guess if you don’t like to cook, it might not be an issue, but kitchens today are big part of entertaining. They are multi purpose rooms that busy women use not only to prepare meals but to pay their bills and to supervise their kids’ homework. They truly are the heart of the home. Keep in mind the style of your home when contemplating a total replacement. If you have a historic home, a modern kitchen would look out of place. You don’t have to sacrifice convenience for style. There are reproduction appliances that would look right at home in an older house and function like modern appliances.

I must admit that I love Paula Deen’s kitchen and if I had unlimited funds, mine would look similar. The idea of a fireplace and seating area is very appealing. I would like hardwood floors and dark cabinetry. A big central island with seating on one side is also on my wish list and don’t get me started about the freezer drawer built in under the counter. In fact, there is nothing about that kitchen I don’t like. It is a beautiful kitchen; but it is also highly functional. A stove with two ovens would be heaven. The convection oven that is built in so you don’t have to bend over to use it is also a nice touch.

Maybe that sort of kitchen is not your thing, but if you’re going to do a kitchen replacement; do some research and get what you truly want. You may not have another chance to get things exactly like you want them. Whether you want your kitchen to look like a step back in time or a walk into the future; you’ll be making the best investment you can.
