Kitchen Tiles
Tiles have a variety of uses in the kitchen. You can have tile floors, tile countertops, or tile backsplashes. There are so many different types of tile and you can spend as much or as little as you want. Some people use less expensive tiles as a backsplash and then accent it with patterned tiles.
You cant really go wrong with white subway tiles for a backsplash. They are relatively inexpensive and create a clean, sleek look. You can vary the look by having them installed on the diagonal instead of in a straight line. You might also consider using a colored tile as a border or mixing in a few colored or patterned tiles in a random pattern. The gorgeous Moorish tiles are spectacular, but cost prohibitive for an entire wall on the average persons budget, but if you use a few of them along with a less expensive option youll definitely get the look for less. I was surprised to find that mural tiles can be fairly inexpensive if you choose a smaller mural. Some companies can even create a custom mural from a photo that you provide.
Granite, slate, and quartz tiles make a durable and attractive option for kitchen flooring. Once they are properly installed and sealed; they are virtually indestructible. They resist scratches and if you happen to drop cutlery on the floor; you will not have tears or holes as you would with vinyl flooring or wood flooring. They are also a good option if you are like me and have dogs running around. One of my good friends had laminate flooring installed and it was beautiful, but she also had a very large, active dog. It was not a good combination because she had noticeable scratches in no time at all from his nails.
Ceramic tiles are sometimes used on countertops. They are heat resistant, but they are also prone to chips and cracks. Even if you apply some sort of sealant; the grout is just a stain magnet and can be difficult to clean. You may want to reserve ceramic tiles for the backsplash areas. If you want a granite countertop and find it too expensive to buy the solid slab; granite 12x12 tiles make a gorgeous countertop. They are laid on clear silicone, so while the lines are visible; once they are sealed they are stain resistant.
Many people today are very concerned about being eco-friendly. There are kitchen tiles for those folks too. There are tiles made entirely from recycled glass. They come in beautiful colors and make a real statement. I have seen aluminum tiles as well that look spectacular in a modern kitchen. With a little research, you can find tiles to suit any budget and decorating style.
